Kacie’s Ride for Hope

“It is a reverent, humbling and solemn experience when over 400 bikes roar to life at once to honor a woman whose life came to a horrific end,” said Julie Sena, the Community Affairs Administrator for the Center for Violence-Free Relationships. “The ground shakes and the air is filled with thunder as if to say… no more will we allow what happened on that tragic day to ever happen again – not on our watch.”

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, Kacie’s Ride is a day-long motorcycle ride through Hope Valley that was started by Placerville resident, Pat Barron, after his sister, Kacie, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in July 2006.

Since his sister was an avid rider, Barron wanted to honor her memory and bring awareness of domestic violence to the motorcycle community. In September 2006, he gathered a group of close friends and held the 1st Annual Kacie’s Ride for Hope to End Domestic Violence and made their first donation to The Center.

The goal of Kacie’s Ride is to educate the motorcycle community and the community at large about domestic violence and raise funds for The Center for Violence-Free Relationships, the domestic violence center that supported Kacie prior to her murder. Since that inaugural ride in 2006, Kacie’s Ride for Hope has donated over $155,000 to The Center to honor Kacie’s memory and to help local victims of domestic violence. “The death of my sister affected everyone in my family,” said Barron. “The piece missing from our lives will never be replaced.”

Kacie’s Ride has grown from a small band of friends to boast over 400 riders that now close down Main Street in Placerville for the take off. The volunteer planning committee works for months planning the run and over 100 volunteers show up to work the event that features a Chapter Challenge, raffle, barbeque, live entertainment by the Cash Prophets and a bike show. This year the committee expects close to 500 riders from Northern California and beyond.

The ride starts at the Bell Tower on Main Street in Placerville on September 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost to register is $30 per person, but couples and larger groups can take advantage of special pricing.
